Well, it’s not that ‘horribly’ slow…. I can’t notice that it’s slower than my IXUS or not.
But hey, I’d like to see how it performs in Low-light…..my IXUS sucks at that
Thanks. This is a very impressive demonstration of what Panasonic has achieved not only with the G1/GH1 but also with its lenses.
It also clarifies why some reviewers claim the E-P1 feels more like a P&S performance-wise.
Thanks for the demo, which clearly shows that the GH1 is faster than the EP1, and that the Panasonic zoom is faster than the Olympus zoom. I agree with stdr, Panasonic’s achievement is remarkable.
AF tests are tricky because one camera might perform better with one type of subject, under one kind of lighting, etc., and another camera might perform better in another.
Still, it’s pretty obvious that Pana put more work into AF performance and that it pays off. With its EVF and better AF speed, it’s clear that the Pana is the better choice of the two for action shooting.
On the other hand, I’d have to say I was surprised to see that the Eepy One’s AF performance doesn’t bite as much as I thought it would. I’m sure that for a lot of people who shoot primarily static subjects, it’ll be completely acceptable.
I totally agree – AF tests are tricky to do. My quick comparison wasn’t meant to be a professional review but to show what I generally experienced with the two cameras. Shooting different subjects like landscapes or close-ups didn’t change much in AF speed, and while shooting in low light the Panasonic lens/camera slowed down less than the E-P1. However, both cameras/lenses are very capable and never prevented me from taking the shots I wanted. There are lots of other important facts, as well, like AF precision and great JPEG engine of the E-P1 that made me keep the E-P1 for now.
