(FT5) What’s next? Three new Olympus and one new Panasonic camera to come.

Share

The E-P5 and this means that I have to work on the next bunch of rumors. So what’s going to be announced as next? According to the info we got we can expect plenty of new stuff. Here are the four new cameras:
1) The new OMD camera
2) The new E-x Four Thirds camera
3) The Olympus high end compact camera (not MFT but a fixed lens with (hopefully) large sensor (unlike the just announced Panasonic LF1).
4) A brand new and completely “different” Panasonic MFT camera.

I already got some info about some of these cameras and I am working to double check the early rumors I got. All I can share for now is that all that stuff is coming from late August till early September. That’s only 3-4 months from now. I know it’s hard to say without knowing specs and design…

but (instinctively) can you tell us what is the camera that interest you more?

Interview with Blackmagic CEO Grant Petty.

Granty Petty Interview NAB 2013 (Part 1) from Rick Young on Vimeo. Here is part two.

At least for me the most exciting MFT news of the last few months is the new BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera (preorder and specs here at BHphoto). For documentary shooters like me this is a hell of camera I can use in condition where I have to travel light or be as unnoticeable as possible. The video on top is the first part of the interview with Blackmagic CEO Grant Petty. The second part can be seen here.

I preordered the camera, becuase we need it at work :)

Panasonic 14-140mm to ship from May 30. And company promises to go back to profit within the year.

Panasonic Japan announced that the new 14-140mm MFT lens will ship from May 30. This is a nice lens, lighter, faster, cheaper than the previous 14-140mm lens. You can preorder the new lens at Amazon (Click here), BHphoto (Click here) and at Wex UK (Click here).

Panasonic financial report:
And now let’s talk about the latest financial report issued by Panasonic. First the bad news: Panasonic reported a near-record net loss of 754bn yen ($7.5 bn) for the fiscal year through March due to restructuring costs and falling sales. And now the good news: Panasonic forecast a return to profitability this year as it cuts unprofitable businesses. This means that they pull away from consumer electronics and this likely includes the compact camera business. And now guess what business is doing best at Panasonic…come on guess…here it is: “washing machines and refrigerators, and the division it dubs “eco solutions”, which makes light fixtures, toilets, ceiling fans and other household fittings” (Source AJ).

In short, last year at Photokina Panasonic clearly stated that they want to go focus on the camera “high end” market. And it is a goal it shares with many other companies including Olympus.

New E-P5 (and E-PL6) news roundup…

E-P5 stills review by Blunty

The main discussion around the new E-P5 was and still is the price. Robin Wong (Click here) posted a report about the Touch and Try Session with the Olympus E-P5 and wrote: “I have been monitoring the overall feedback and comments on the Olympus PEN E-P5, and many mentioned that they were taken aback with the rather high pricing. After all the E-P5 is a “Premium” camera, and it does have almost all the important features of OM-D E-M5.  Nonetheless, Olympus Malaysia did have special offers for the E-P5 pre-orders, with MASSIVE discounts given for bundling with the amazing Olympus M.Zuiko 17mm F1.8 and the new electronic viewfinder VF-4!!

Indeed the Black E-P5 superkit is now the most ordered MFt camera according to Amazon ranking (Click here to see the list).

More E-P5 news: Federico Cabrera (the OM-D photographer) is doing something artistic around the PEN E-P5 on facebook.com.
