Olympus E-5 to be announced in a few hours (6am London time?)

Share

The Olympus E-5 should be announced September the 14th. I am not sure about the exact hour but usually it is at 6-7am London that Olympus products get announced.

In the meanwhile other sources confirmed that the image is REAL and so are the specifications we posted with the only exception of the frame rate (5fps instead of 6fps). The real new feature should be the new TruePic engine. Let’s see how much the image quality will improve compared to the [shoplink 14830]Olympus E-P2[/shoplink].

One of our sources said that “The image quality is good. It’s not a bad camera!“. I know, not really an exciting statement :(

As usual I will cover all the news, previews about the E-5.

After that we will try to get news about the GH2 and the new lenses which are going to be announced on September 21. So keep following 43rumors!

P.S.: After the GH2 announcement I will finally take some time off :)

43rumors: Olympus future is more than just the E-5…

Share

As a reaction on all the E-5 comments, I have chosen to write the following post:

I am as surprised as you are about the new Photokina Olympus products (the MFT lenses and the rumored E-5 specs). Those are not what we were hoping for. The past few months I received so many rumors about the Olympus modular system, new electronic shutter Kodak sensor, super43 sensors and more! Over ten(!) good sources from three different continents contacted me to talk about those features. Some of them saw prototypes of such cameras! I don’t believe those rumors are false, not for a second! As I told you months ago (Click here to read the post) I don’t know when we are going to see all that nice new stuff. It sounds like the E-5 will be an “in-between” solution. But that could not be enough! I really hope Olympus will give us some clear answers about the FourThirds future. I know Olympus is reading me, so I ask you: “Can you not reveal us what you plan to do in the future?

P.S.: What is the super43 sensor? A larger 43 sensor, defacto Fullframe :)

(FT5) UPDATED: E-5 uses the same PEN sensor and will be available in October

Share

UPDATE: It is not true that the E-5 will use a new 12MPX sensor.
We just learned that the E-5 uses the same Panasonic 12 Megapixel sensor used for the [shoplink 14830]PEN[/shoplink]. Olympus preferred that sensor over the new Panasonic 16 Megapixel sensor (I guess we are talking about the GH2 sensor).

The E-5 should be available in October and be a little cheaper than the [shoplink 15032]Olympus E-3[/shoplink] was when launched in October 2007 ($1699).

We are not sure yet if other Olympus products will be announced after the E-5 (which will be unveiled on September 14).

Reminder -> The E-5 specs:

– Weather-proof (Magnesium) body
– 12.1Megapixel sensor (The same Olympus PEN sensor!)
– ISO 100 – 6400 in 1/3 or 1 EV steps
– AVI Motion JPEG(30fps) HD (720)
– 5fps
– it can take a picture with sound.
– mono mic with stereo external microphone input
– 3 inch LCD with 920.000 dots resolution
– 11 points full-twin cross AF sensor (phase-difference detection system)
– 11 area multiple AF (contrast detection system)
– CF and SD dual slot
– Built-in wireless flash

(FT5) Panasonic GH2 discovered on the beach :)

Share

IMPORTANT UPDATE: We have been requested to remove the picture and DVXuser reference :(

The GH2 looks similar to a [shoplink 14834]G2[/shoplink], but got a flash card door on the right like the [shoplink 14826]GH1[/shoplink]!

Reminder:

The Panasonic GH2 (along the 14mm, 100-300mm and 3D lenses) will be announced on Tuesday September 21 (the first day of Photokina). It will have a new 18 Megapixel multi aspect sensor. Like the Canon 7D and Canon T2i (550D) this is the highest resolution sensor available for non-fullframe cameras (APS-C or FourThirds). But because it is a multi-aspect sensor the effective resolution will be 16 Megapixel. It is the highest resolution sensor ever used for a (Micro-)FourThirds camera. The new Olympus E-5 (to be announced on September 14) will not use that sensor.

In the meanwhile the GH1 is becoming cheaper and cheaper almost eveywhere ([shoplink 14826]Click here to check the current price[/shoplink]). But keep in mind that the Gh1 hack doesn’t work anymore with the newest Panasonic firmware!
