Olympus US cash back action: Get money for your old camera to buy a new Olympus!

Share

Olympus US just launched a new Cash Back action. And this time it is a particularly interesting offer! You can trade in your “old” camera (from every brand) and you will get cash to buy an Olympus camera.

But now the funniest part: They also created a Digital Camera Value Estimator that calculates the value of your camera!

I would never trade in my Olympus E-P1 but I still own an old Pentax K10D. I used the estimator and Olympus US would give me $178.00 for it! To bad that I am located in Europe :(
Anyway, you would probably get more for your camera if you sell it on [shoplink 15032]eBay[/shoplink]

I guess it’s a good moment to shop for the [shoplink 14832]Olympus E-PL1 ($519 on amazon)[/shoplink] or the [shoplink 14830]Olympus E-P2[/shoplink]!

Some shots from Tuscany (Olympus E-P1, 17mm f/2.8 and Noktor 50mm f/0.95)

Share

As you know I am on vacation in Tuscany. I still working on rumors and news but it is not funny having such slow Internet connection. The good news is that my leg is healing and I can almost walk normally. I am a little bit frustrated because I lost almost the entire summer because of the broken ligament. I was supposed to travel to Ghana first and Malawi than (for work). NIET!
Once back from my vacation (soon) I will work fulltime on 43rumors. There is still a lot to do! I am finally getting very good rumors and I bet we will have an exciting time all together ;)

What I am expecting from Photokina? I don’t need a new MFT camera. The Olympus E-P1 is good enough for my needs. The 17mm f/2.8 is perfect for everyday use and the Noktor 50mm is also nice for low-light shots. But I would love to see some nice fast MFT primes ;)

In the meanwhile I am sharing some unprocessed and very simple images. Here is where I am now :)

Have a nice weekend 43rumors folks!

The GH1 hacker interviewed: Panasonic GH2 prediction, Olympus hack and why the GH1 is better than the Canon 5D!

Share

Mirrorlessrumors had the pleasure to meet the famous hacker Vitaly Kiselev. Yes, it is the guy that hacked our GH1 and GF1 cameras!

I am going to post a small part of the interview here:

————–

MR: What motivated you to work hard on the GH1 hack? Was it the DVXuser community?
VK: Generally speaking, yes. I would especially like to say a big thanks to Dvxuser admins and Barry Green personally. Next thing that motivated me: the enormous GH1 potential.

MR: What do you mean by “potential”?
VK: I mean that Panasonic amazingly lost the VDSLR battle to Canon, having a much better camera. :-)

MR: How was that possible?
VK: You just need to remember the history: 2009.

MR: Why?
VK: Do you remember? You had the GH1 announcement and. oops. from nowhere ML (Magic Lantern) for
the Canon 5D MKII appears Canon 5D MKII appears…and the threads about mud in 1080p24.

MR: Why is the GH1 a better camera…and why did Canon win the battle?
VK: GH1 is just one step ahead. A good viewfinder, screen suitable for video shooting. AVCHD is not limited in length. In reality they had to win all. They just made three main errors. And I am worried that they can do it again with the GH2.

MR: And the errors are?
VK: 1) They sell kit only. With high priced kit lens it is a bad decision. People do not have options.
2) They did not do any tests for its AVCHD encoder. Even 24Mbit setting (and this is within standards) could be much better. This is a software only error, easy to fix.
3) They did not understand who opinion makers are. They spend millions on marketing for average Joe, but average Joe reads specialized forums and opinion makers.
They must make features and have people to deal with opinion makers. Canon did exactly this. Not from the start, but they started moving.

MR: In some countries (like UK) body only option is available. Maybe what we miss here are more “dedicated” video lenses.
VK: As for body only version. UK is a bad example with very high prices :-)

MR: Why do you think Panasonic will repeat the mistake with the GH2 (or GH3)?
VK: From my sources (this is not a high level management), they all think that as soon as they reveal GH2, all problems will be solved. Instantly. No need to ask for things the users need, no need to deal with opinion makers. No. They know better. Normally this is good sign of a disaster.

New version of CameraKompare for your iPhone

Share

The creator of CameraKompare (J.D. Hodges) sent me following text:

I’ve just released a new free update to Camera Kompare which includes the Panasonic LX5 and 24 other new cameras, plus optimizations for the iPhone 4 retina display.

Now I need to decide which features to implement first in the next free update. Your readers seem to have a really good grasp of what they’d like to see in a mobile camera app, so their feedback would definitely help me improve the app!

Which feature would you most like to see in the next free update to Camera Kompare:

View Results

Loading ... Loading ...

*This will increase the app download size from approx 12MB to approx 34MB.

NOTE 1 APERTURE – the next version (1.3) will compare apertures between cameras with fixed lenses (since it’s a definite include, that’s why it’s not on the poll).
NOTE 2 LENS COMPARE – How useful would a interchangeable lens comparison feature be? The idea would be that users could compare for example the 17mm Olympus m43 lens vs. the Panasonic 20mm m43 lens etc. If readers care to leave comments on this, that would help me gauge interest (it’s not in the poll b/c this feature will take a while and wouldn’t make it into the next immediate upgrade).
NOTE 3 ANDROID – if you’d like to see an Android version, please leave a note in the comments!

Thanks in advance to all your awesome readers!!!

(FT5) Panasonic GH2 + lens announcement on September 21!

Share

The new Sony A33 has almost the same size as current Panasonic G2 and GH1 cameras.

Finally we received very good info from our reliable sources. Panasonic will announce the new Panasonic GH2 and new lenses on September 21 (probably at 6am London time). We previousely told you that there was a planned Panasonic press release on Augst 26. According to our good sources Panasonic postponed the announcement for the GH2!
We are now investigating the reason for the delay. We know that Panasonic new sensor development has taken more time than expected and that could be the main reason for the delay. Another reason could be the announcement of the Nikon D3100 and Sony A55 and A33 cameras. Maybe Panasonic wants to make some last minute changes…

We will tell you more about the GH2 as soon as we have bulletproof infos!

P.S.: Nikon had their press release today, Canon and Sony will have it next week. Olympus and Panasonic only by mid Spetember. Does that mean something?
