First forum rumors about the next Olympus Fourthirds camera…

Share

A dpreview forum user just wrote this:

Just got back from PMA Melbourne. Spoke to 2 olympus reps.
Both confirmed olympus commitment to DSLR and Lens production.

One rep told me there is a pro spec DSLR on the way. It will use the PEN TruePic V
“and a few other surprises that will make it quite a remarkable camera”
I was told an announcement is due at photokina 2010.

I went to the show looking for an oly alternative, but after some discussion and a play with the super pro lens line up, im happy to stick with olympus. (Cause i didnt want to change systems anyway,)

Normally we don’t post rumors like this but in that case our sources do confirm that the informations are correct. As we told you on 43urmors the camera will have some “modular tuch” :)

(FT2) Ghost hauntings: New Olympus modular camera spotted

Share

One of our readers (E.O.) had a “strange” experience:
I could swear I saw a prototype Olympus modular at the Decatur Arts Festival near Atlanta this weekend. An Asian gentleman was walking around, a good distance from the edge of the crowd, shooting photos with what looked like an Olympus E1Olympus E1Olympus E1Olympus E1Olympus E1Olympus E1Olympus E1Olympus E1Olympus E1Olympus E1Olympus E1 with a battery grip. I went up to talk 4/3, but when I got closer, I saw what looked like a removable square module for the lens mount that would slide in and out from the top. There was a definite groove around the bottom and sides of the lens mount. The only markings were OLYMPUS above the lens mount. When I came up and said “Is that the new Olympus?”, he looked shocked, covered the camera with his arm, and literally ran away. ????? Maybe I just startled him, but it was a very bizarre camera. Maybe we will see at Photokina.

It is not the first time 43rumors has received such kind of rumors. And we know you should take it with a grain of salt. In a second email E.O. sent me some more informations:

I did not get that good a look at the camera, since once I approached him, he covered it and ran off. I did not see him remove a module, but as best I could see, it looked like the whole lens mount would slide in from the top. There was a distinct line below and to the sides of the lens mount, but not on top, so I would guess they slide in from the top. Perhaps that would allow a choice between EVF and Optical? The camera itself looked like a combination of an E1 and E 300E 300E 300E 300E 300E 300E 300E 300E 300E 300E 300 with a battery grip. It looked like he was using a 12-60 on it. The finish didn’t look great either, like it was cobbled together.

I don’t know why an Oly prototype would end up at an art festival in Atlanta, but it was definitely a strange camera.

Message from one of our readers: “Just in case anyone is interested the new Olympus Viewer 2 Software (Windows version) seems to work great with Linux and WINE. I’m running it on Gentoo Linux without any problems at all.
Stop Here if not interested in programming languages…
I tried earlier versions of one of their packages (Can’t remember which) but they relied on .Net which doesn’t easily work under Linux while this new version seems to be based off of C++. C++ usually (not always) yields faster programs and is much more compatible with my favorite OS (Linux). I’m a software engineer myself just so you know where I coming from.

Is the Panasonic 8mm too expensive? Get the Samyang 8mm f/3.5 for $300

Share

GF1 + Samyang 8mm from ADAM MADA on Vimeo.

One of our readers R.B. found a “solution” for all of you thinking that the new Panasonic 8mm f/3.5 fisheye lens is too expensive.
If you don’t care about size or manual focusing you could go for the Samyang/Falcon/Bower/Rokinon/Opteka 8mm Fisheye that sells for $300. It produces sharp images and has no vignetting. Used with a $20 adapter for Micro 4/3 u get a nice fisheye image at half the price.

Click here to get the lens on eBay (and yes it is crazy that the same lens has so many names!):
