What the new S5II camera means for the future of MFT

Share

After reading the S5II(x) specs I had the following thoughts:

Future MFT cameras will have Phase Detection Autofocus
But DFD is here to stay and it will be interesting to see how it works combined with the new Phase detection AF.

You have to pay extra for some features like Apple ProRes and IP streaming function
It’s somehow odd that we will get basically two identical cameras, the S5II and S5IIx with the “x” having the only addition of Apple ProRes and IP streaming function. This remembers me of the failed paid software update strategy that never worked. Now they force you to buy the same camera with a different badge to get the little extras. Don’t like that.

Full Frame still cannot offer the superb Image Stabilization of MFT cameras
Both the S5II and S5IIx have 5-step in-body image stabilization. Quite a lot behind the 7.5 stops stabilization of the GH6.

Still long way to go until we get proper 8K
As expected no 8k on the new S5II and I don’t think we will get 8K on any new MFT camera that will be announced in 2023.
